Favorite restaurant in Yogyakarta

  • Bebek Bengoong: A small duck shop located right next to Loving Hut (that popular vegetarian restaurant). It’s a very simple place and the food is delicious: one of the best fried/grilled duck in Jogja.
  • Dapur Manado: Located at Jl. Melati Kulon 22 Baciro. If you like food so spicy it feels like an angry fire-breathing dragon is throwing a tantrum in your anus, then you need to check out Dapur Manado.
  • Ganesha ek Sanskriti: This new Indian restaurant just moved into Sheraton and it’s very good. They have a real Indian chef and this isn’t their first branch. Ganesha is lightyears ahead of all the other Indian restaurants in Jogja. (In fact, the rest of the Indian restaurants are an insult to Indian food). It’s quite expensive, but it’s unique and worth it. You won’t get North Indian food anywhere else in the province. If the menu had more variety (or they changed it up every now and then), if the prices were a bit lower, and if it wasn’t so far, I’d be going to Ganesha all the time.
  • Mediterranea: On Jl Tirtodipuran, in the heart of the bule area of Jogja, this romantic French restaurant has been gradually improved by Chef Kamil. They recently did some renovation work. Their duck breast with risotto and the chicken kebab tastes better than ever. If you’re making the trip down to Mediterranea, stop by ViaVia on Jl. Prawirotaman (3 minutes away) for some Es Dawet drink (it’s the best Es Dawet I’ve found in Jogja; my second favorite Es Dawet place is off the street-side just before Prambanan).
  • Lotek Gado-Gado Colombo Bu Bagyo: In the Sagan area of Jogja, minutes from the UGM campus, this simple little joint serves up the meanest gado-gado and lotek in town.
  • Gudeg Yu Djum: I tried gudeg (from the side of the street) once when I first came to Jogja but I thought it kind of sucked so I just never tried it again. I went with friends to breakfast at Yu Djum, and now I’m sold on gudeg: the stuff’s pretty good and makes for a decent-sized snack or light meal, perfect for breakfast. It’s 5 minutes from campus, but I’m not exactly sure of the address. Ask around, Yu Djum is famous.
